as i departed that depleted kingdom
at the high gate guards demanded
words, & as so far i'd mostly winged it
now something rose less random
the streetcar in the tutelary fog
will let you out in front of gargoyles
mind already ornament-surplus boggles
meets two-headed harg
& snarling angel. this is what i've learned
gentlemen; what i may not leave
encounter more bizarre than i deserve
more true, insight damascened
& what passed then between us i can't tell
but all i know that one look gave
thunder & rubies out to fingertips revv
wings in gold mesh flail—
& that's the book i left them with
shaking the dust from these unsteady sandals
