I bought a painting for Melanie at a vintage clothing store; it was a delightful cubist-impressionist cityscape, redolent of "Populuxe" living rooms & doctors' offices, & it only cost thirty dollars. After we got it up, i thought to google the artist, one "Viktor Schreckengost". Not only did he turn out to be a well-known industrial designer of midcentury, whose credits include the "Mercury" bicycle, "Americana" dinnerware, & the cab-over arrangement that big flat-front truck cabs all use now--there was an almost identical painting (watercolor like ours, but orange instead of blue & green) on a gallery site for $7000.
