The kingdom of hunger
In the soft light of morning
Sets its hands on the living
Most discerning ogre
The kingdom of hunger

Lose count of the inning
Our prescriptions waning
Barely parsed anger
The kingdom of hunger

And yet the utter meaning
Does not leave us wanting
Where parades of doom linger
The kingdom of hunger

"Getting rid of physical books because we now have databases is like getting rid of sunshine because of the existence of vitamin-D pills and cod liver oil." (There's a bit of weird semi-racist/homophobic nonsense in here which is completely irrelevant to the main point, & i don't endorse it, but the main point is sound.)

Jerusalem.

The Asemic movement was starting just as my own trajectory (to be a bit pretentious) was taking me into artificial languages--later "conlangs"--instead. At the same time my paintings were growing more & more calligraphic, until i realized i had to go back & look at precursors like Tobey & Twombly (not to mention the painting of Zen). About the only theory i had at that point...was the Tao te Ching: "those who know/ don't say".

   This piano travels within,
travels by joyful leaps.
Then meditates in ferrate repose,
nailed with ten horizons.

It advances. Drags itself under tunnels,
beyond, under tunnels of pain,
under vertebrae naturally fugacious.

   At times its tubes go,
slow asias yellow with living,
they go in eclipse,
and insectile nightmares delouse,
now dead to thunder, the herald of geneses.

Dark piano, on whom do you spy
with your deafness that hears me,
with your muteness that deafens me?

   Oh mysterious pulse."

Your eyes didn't match.

And no leaves on the lindens then
we didn't know if we'd see you again.

"What the distinction of place means is indifferent to the unfinished man; like the fool, he does everything at all places without distinction. Fools, therefore, achieve reason when they recover the sense for time and place. To put different things in different places, to allot different places to things that differ in quality – that is the condition for all economy including even that of the mind. Not to put in the text what belongs to the footnotes, not to put at the beginning what is to be put at the end, in short, spatial differentiation and limitation belong also to the wisdom of the writer."

"Autumn Comes

For base and noble the same end
When every ambition's won or lost.
Galloping waves urge on the endless night,
Falling dew hurries the brief dawn
.
--From 'Song of the Underworld' (Tai k'ao-li hsing) by Pao Chao (414-66)

The wind in the wu-t'ung startles the heart, a lusty man despairs;
Spinners in the fading lamplight cry chill silk.
Who will study a bamboo book still green
And forbid the grubs to bore their powdery holes?
This night's thoughts will surely stretch my guts straight:
Cold in the rain a sweet phantom comes to console the writer.
By the autumn tombs a ghost chants the poem of Pao Chao.
My angry blood for a thousand years will be emeralds under the earth!"
