It's not so much that ChatGPT plagiarizes, i think, as that it threatens a great amount of human writing that is sub-literary but practically remunerative. Most of what humans are paid to write is nothing great as art, & the writers know it. I think back to before photography, when illustrated books had to have every picture made by someone who knew the art of engraving. Those were a lot of jobs, even though they weren't Doré-quality, & a person who was not famous enough as a painter to sell paintings, could do this sort of piecework to get by.
