What if Diego River[a] painted contemporary world?

"Progress

Soon there will be no one alive
Who learned at an early age
How two keys struck at the same time
Jam and never hit the page."

A new spin on Betelgeuse's boiling surface.

"Dominion

Under the grackles' bridge
two azure pennants snap--
a faded turret's luffing
on a child's backyard tent.
This runnel-moat Windsor's
thane gropes at sunrise
through frayed plastic flaps.

The Fairmont Estates are rising
'for luxury connoisseurs'
north of his scrounged fief.
'Wolf Ranges. Three Gated Stalls.'
Nailguns tack, tack, tacking.
Dodging the fusillade,
the silver-haired seigneur

steps out in nylon hauberk.
He sifts a treasure-midden's
clanking, needled bin,
bags two nickel grails;
pop dribbles through his fingers
down his sleeves. He limps
toward glass pavilions,

winces; wilts on a curb;
cradles his chapping heel.
Above him, arithmancers
assess each offshore take.
Back at Fairmont's scaffold,
delivery men unwrap
freezers of burnished steel,

snug insulation rolls;
concrete pits keep drying.
The Knight of the Rusting Cart
creaks back by dusk
when the corner toy store
takes down its Merlin flag.
His pennants go on flying."
