"One concept essential to an understanding of ko-uta is that of iroke. One of those frustratingly untranslatable terms, iroke is written with two characters, ( )( ), one meaning 'color' (iro), the other 'feeling,' (ke or ki). Iro in this case most closely approximates the meaning of 'eroticism'--but in a milder sense than the English word conveys. Ke means something along the lines of 'character' or 'spirit.'
...Iroke is sensuality; it is evoked by images which appeal to the senses. It denotes attraction felt between the sexes in the passing of a glance or the swish of a trailing kimono. The essence of iroke is understatement. The minute it becomes obvious it ceases to be iroke. It is a subtle atmosphere created by the contact of two people. It cannot exist in the abstract, and it is not as blatant as 'sex appeal.' It implies intimacy in that it becomes lost in an impersonal situation.
Some examples of iroke are: the tiny glimpse of red which lines the geisha's formal black kimono, seen against the white of the powdered nape of her neck; the sidelong glance, exchanged without a word, between a man and woman; playing the shamisen with the fingernail instead of the large ivory plectrum; the four-and-a-half-mat tatami room (yoyohan) which is just big enough for two people and a small table; the kotatsu, or quilt-covered table under which feet may be talking while faces above show no sign; one strand of hair loose in an otherwise perfect coiffure."

--Liza Dalby, Littl* Songs of th* G*isha (2000)

"how to explain death to children

because the fearful dog wandered the fields all day and hadn’t been
neutered
and due to the fearful dog biting the owner who tried to catch him
the owner asked the neighbor to shoot the dog

the neighbor agreed but brought up the possibility of evidence
blood and brains all over the side of the house
still he consented but instead he borrowed a cage from the humane
society

for days the owner starved the dog to lure him into taking the bait
and because the humane society put down the biting unneutered

the dog ended up dead

how to tell the children
who thought the dog was being sent away to find a newer and better
home
(what home could be better?) (wouldn’t he miss them badly?)

they asked their parents whether someone might have already
adopted their dog
and wouldn’t the dog be even more afraid in a new house with new
people
and if no one had chosen the dog yet could they have him back

when the parents asked the neighbor to tell the children the dog died
the neighbor agreed to go to the humane society to try and adopt the
dog
but he found no dog that answered and told the children that"

  'One pillar holding up consolations,
another pillar,
a duplicate pillar, pillarous
and like the grandchild of a dark door.
Lost noise, the one, listening, at the edge of fatigue;
drinking, the other, two by two with handles.

Don't I perhaps know the year of this day,
the hatred of this love, the planks of this forehead?
Don't I know that this afternoon costs days?
Don't I know that never does one say "never," on one's knees?

  The pillars that I saw are listening to me;
other pillars are, twos and sad grandchildren of my leg.
I say it in American copper
which owes to silver so much fire!

  Consoled by third marriages,
pallid, born,
I am going to close my baptismal font, this showcase,
this fright with tits,
this finger in deathrow,
heartly tied to my skeleton.'

    "The truth about chiggers

Since so many people I run into tell me terrible tales of chigger bites, I
thought I'd share the truth about chiggers.

Chiggers are the larvae of the harvest mite. They do not burrow into your
body.
They pierce the skin and inject a fluid that liquifies your tissues. Then they
suck you up! They might do this several times before dropping off your
body. By
the time you feel the itch, the chigger is long gone.

The place that was liquified begins to go through necrosis, or death. Death is
itchy business, causing lots of histamine to be released.

<> <> <> What Not To Do <> <> <>

Never ever ever apply nail polish to a chigger bite. All that does is place
benzene, a component of most nail polishes, directly into your bloodstream.
Since benzene is a carcinogen, that's not a good idea. Nail polish, like most
chigger remedies, is a counter irritant. It simply takes your attention away
from the itch. Many are rough on the skin, causing the bite to linger.

<> <> <> What To Do <> <> <>

Anti-itch potions with antihistamines like Benadryl work best. But the most
definitive way to make the itch go away is to heal the skin from the necrosis.
Nuture your bites with calamine lotion (clay is soothing), aloe vera or skin
creams with healing substances like comfrey. Sulfur also makes chigger bites
feel better.

<> <> <> How to Prevent Chigger Bites <> <> <>

Chiggers hate sulfur. So before heading out into nature, dust yourself
thoroughly, very thoroughly, with sulfur powder. Focus on your feet,
lower legs
and waistband. Dusting sulfur is sold in most garden stores. The easy way to
apply it is to pour some in an old sock and whap yourself with it. But most
conventional and natural insect repellents will deter chiggers -- if they are
applied very thickly and reapplied often (unless is contains DEET, which
should
only be applied once every 8 hours).

Chiggers like thick weeds in shady areas with plenty of moisture. So
creekbottoms are chigger breeding factories. Avoid them or move through them
quickly.

It takes a few hours for chiggers to get around to biting you. Take a
full-body
shower (if you can) right after a hike, or wipe yourself down thoroughly.
Focus
on areas where the skin is folded, like armpits and crotches, or where your
clothes bind firmly, like waistbands and around shoes. Sulfur soap is
best. Also
wash your clothes and brush off your shoes vigorously."

Tinted so barbarously by the clay
The rusty iron and the ocean-spray
Which lifted up my body from the soil.
Forgive the complicated brittle coil
Of my infirm invention, which I lay
Where you may pause, and pass, and never stay.
Here are the shocks of maize, the honey and oil,

The fruits like harvest moons, the fabulous land,
The crystal hills, the veiled prismatic plain;
And you will come, and you will not remain,
Nor leave a trace along the gilded sand.
So presently you will be come and gone;
Here’s a strange road for you to walk upon."

'I have a terrible fear of being an animal
of white snow, that supported father
and mother, with only its veiny circulation,
and that, this splendid day, solar and archepiscopal,
a day that thus represents the night,
this animal
lineally avoids being happy, breathing,
and transforming itself and having money.

It would be a great pity
if I were a real man to that degree.
A folly, a most fruitful premise
to whose occasional yoke succumbs
the spiritual hinge of my waist.
A folly... Meanwhile,
it is like this, this side of God’s head,
in the tablet of Locke, of Bacon, in the livid neck
of the beast, in the snout of the soul.

  And, in aromatic logic,
I have this practical fear, this splendid
lunar day, of being that one, this one perhaps,
to whose nose the ground, the living folly
and the dead folly smell of death.

Oh to roll about, to exist, to cough, to belt,
to belt the doctrine, one's temple, from shoulder to shoulder,
to move away, to cry, to give it for eight
or for seven or for six, for five or to give it
for life with its three powers.'

Girls, exquisite the gifts of the fragrant Muses:
snag them, and the clear melodious lyre;

once so fain of the dance, have lost their candor.
Although I might complain like there’s any use--

    "MIRAGE

The hope I dreamed of was a dream,
Was but a dream: and now I wake
Exceeding comfortless, and worn, and old,
  For a dream’s sake.

I hang my harp upon a tree,
  A weeping willow in a lake;
I hang my silenced harp there, wrung and snapt
  For a dream’s sake.

Lie still, lie still, my breaking heart;
My silent heart, lie still and break:
Life, and the world, and mine old self, are changed
For a dream's sake."

    ”Bell Tower

I have seen, desolate one, the voice has its tower;
The voice also, builded at secret cost,
Its temple of precious tissue. Not silent then
Forever--casting silence in your hour.

There marble boys are leant from the light throat,
Thick locks that hang with dew and eye dewlashed,
Dazzled with morning, angels of the wind,
With ear a-point for the enchanted note.

And these at length shall tip the hanging bell,
And first the sound must gather in deep bronze,
Till, clearer than ice, purer than a bubble of gold,
It beat in the sky and the air and the ear’s remorseless well.”

" 'But...why don't your poets and storytellers write your literature? How can you just machine-generate it?'
Tz'iquin seemed faintly amused. 'Both of you come from a culture that favors the writer, the 'maker', the poet, whatever you wish to call the one who creates new work, and so you think that every literary culture must be dominated by them. We Maya don't much make new works, but we develop an ever-better understanding of our old works. In that regard, at least, we are not unlike you, with your endless expositions of Kural, Ettutokai, and Pattuppattu. The difference is that we don't write about the same old work over and over; we discipline ourselves to the adventure of endless reading, seeing how many more things a thing can mean rather than trying to find the one right meaning for it. And to us, it does not really matter where those old works came from, or whether they are perfect or models for anything else, so long as they are truly Maya. A carefully done transform of a Maya myth is as Maya as the original, is it not?' "

"If the Bretons and the Scots still struggle to regain their independence as sovereign states, and if we Americans continue to dream of living like Thoreau at Walden Pond, it is permissible for the student of words to keep alive his convictions about certain meanings and usages that he knows to be no longer shared by the majority, including many educated persons." --Mod*rn Am*rican Usag*, under lost caus*s. 3. g. publically not publicly.

"The ratio of critics to artists was part of what took me a lot of effort to understand. In Nou Occitan, where I grew up, there were many artists and a few critics, and the critics were looked down on and rather pitied, as people who couldn’t paint, sing, write, or whatever. It was a point of honor for Occitan artists to ignore critics, or else to chastise them rather than to reply to them.... This allowed truly atrocious artists to have someone they could look down on, since any real Occitan would rather make a rotten work than a sound argument. Better still, given how bad our art was, it kept the number of people who might point that out so small that they could not possibly get around to looking at most of it.
Here in Tamil Mandalam, though, it was quite the reverse. The critics were so numerous and so respected that hardly anyone dared any art; what there was of new works was highly polished and refined little gems, bits of formal perfection, which were nevertheless attacked regularly for their triviality. Where the mostly-young Occitan poets were sloppy, emotional, often bathetic, and prolific far beyond demand, the Tamil poets labored for decades to become brilliant specialists, masters of prosody with not much more feeling than most people associated with chess masters."

And yet you think our verses will upbraid
And, cataractous, be the death of us?
You see how keen on carbon copies I’m uplaid,
All unctuous against the slavish numbers,
Lit glancingly, I doggedly elide
If only to broach, my sometime counter,
The sea that barters its clock for candor.
Who walks that way, like Cypress in the wind?

That crowns our arbus with a sea thing's fin.

6. How do songs call on things far from that world?

7. A mind's bounds and laws find microcosm in song worlds.

8. Only in microcosm do our tragic days occur as story.

9. Any part of a world with laws shows us story.

" If you were to step back in time, to somewhere 200 or 300 years ago, somewhere across the Mediterranean, there you would find exactly this type of melody and arrangement. What we are doing is to reclaim a very ancient Mediterranean tradition, from the Egyptians and especially from the Ancient Greeks, basically using what are known as Greek and Roman 'modes.' By this, I mean the musical scales that were used before the 'theory of chords' appeared in the 17th and 18th centuries. This theory was a milestone in the history of western music, but before there was another type of music before called the 'Ars Antiqua' which was modal1 and monodic2. And then came the 'Ars Nova' which corresponds to the period in music when chords first appeared. We wanted to reclaim a series of melodic arrangements that were supposedly composed without the tradition of the 'Ars Antiqua.' Our search led us to those Mediterranean musics that maintain that tradition, that is Arabic, Turkish and Spanish Folklore." --As-if music.

"Traditionally Mavortians paint with their non-leading hand." --Dr Swot

" 'Know first, the heavens, the earth, the flowing sea,
The moon's bright globe, and the Titanian stars
By one interior spirit are sustained:
Through all their members interfused, a mind
Quickens the mass entire, and mingling stirs
The mighty frame. Thence springs the life of men,
And grazing flocks, and flying birds, and all
The strange shapes in the deep and shining sea.
A fiery vigor animates these germs,
And a celestial origin, so far
As our gross bodies clog them not, nor weight
Of perishable limbs impedes the soul.
Hence they desire and fear, rejoice and grieve;
And, shut in prisons dark, they look not back
Upon the skies. Nor e'en when life’s last ray
Has fled, does every ill depart, nor all
Corporeal taints quite leave their unhappy frames.
And needs must be that many a hardened fault
Inheres in wondrous ways. Therefore the pains
Of punishment they undergo, for sins
Of former times. Some in the winds are hung
Suspended and exposed. Others beneath
A waste of waters from their guilt are cleansed,
Or purified by fire. We all endure
Our ghostly retribution. Thence, a few
Attain the free Elysium’s happy fields,
Till Time’s great cycle of long years, complete,
Clears the fixed taint, and leaves the etherial sense
Pure, a bright flame of unmixed heavenly air.
All these, when for a thousand years the wheel
Of fate has turned, the Deity calls forth
To Lethe’s stream, a mighty multitude;
That they, forgetful of the past, may see
Once more the vaulted sky, and may begin
To wish return into corporeal frames.' "

    ”Always Already

The heft ends in a humid click. We are now compressed according to what everybody already knows about an accordion. Talcum in the folds, hiss crowded to fading. It cannot persist and so will end outside.

We were up all night in the bellows with the bellhop, husking lemons and catching ice. The folds sing. This is where we will look.

The sheer size of it partitioned the hug and set the heel of the answer. The sparkle delayed the thud. We knew our water was undrinkable and all we had.

We will not, without air, get high enough to pierce this.

We are hunters, squeezing out a script. This mumbling is ten feet tall. I can’t see you. There is a truck slapping plates. Your words are silver and creeped. I don’t feel bad that I can’t hear you. When we get out, we get out.

The heft rounds itself up.”

    "A Dead March

PLAY me a march, low-ton’d and slow—a march for a silent tread,
Fit for the wandering feet of one who dreams of the silent dead,
Lonely, between the bones below and the souls that are overhead.

Here for a while they smil’d and sang, alive in the interspace,
Here with the grass beneath the foot, and the stars above the face,
Now are their feet beneath the grass, and whither has flown their grace?

Who shall assure us whence they come, or tell us the way they go?
Verily, life with them was joy, and, now they have left us, woe,
Once they were not, and now they are not, and this is the sum we know.

Orderly range the seasons due, and orderly roll the stars.
How shall we deem the soldier brave who frets of his wounds and scars?
Are we as senseless brutes that we should dash at the well-seen bars?

No, we are here, with feet unfix’d, but ever as if with lead
Drawn from the orbs which shine above to the orb on which we tread,
Down to the dust from which we came and with which we shall mingle dead.

No, we are here to wait, and work, and strain our banish’d eyes,
Weary and sick of soil and toil, and hungry and fain for skies
Far from the reach of wingless men, and not to be scal’d with cries.

No, we are here to bend our necks to the yoke of tyrant Time,
Welcoming all the gifts he gives us—glories of youth and prime,
Patiently watching them all depart as our heads grow white as rime.

Why do we mourn the days that go—for the same sun shines each day,
Ever a spring her primrose hath, and ever a May her may;
Sweet as the rose that died last year is the rose that is born to-day.

Do we not too return, we men, as ever the round earth whirls?
Never a head is dimm’d with gray but another is sunn’d with curls;
She was a girl and he was a boy, but yet there are boys and girls.

Ah, but alas for the smile of smiles that never but one face wore;
Ah, for the voice that has flown away like a bird to an unseen shore;
Ah, for the face—the flower of flowers—that blossoms on earth no more."

    ”Doves

      1

Mother of mouthings,
the grey doves in your many branches
code and decode what warnings
we call recall of love’s watery tones?

   hurrrrrr
   harrrrrr
   hurrr .

She raises the bedroom window
to let in the air and pearl-grey
   light of morning
where the first world stript of its names extends,
where initial things go,
beckoning dove-sounds recur
taking what we know of them

from the soul leaps to the tongue’s tip
   as if to tell
      what secret
in the word for it.

      2

The bird claws scraping the ledges.
I hear the rustling of wings. Is it evening?
The woodwinds chortling or piping,
sounds settling down in the dark pit where the orchestra lights glow
as the curtain rises, and in the living room,
as another stage,
lamps are lit.

      3

The lady in the shade of the boughs
held a dove in her two hands,
let it fly up from the bowl she made
as if a word had left her lips.

Now that the song has flown
the tree shakes, rustling in the wind,
with no stars of its own,
for all the nets of words are gone.

The lady holds nothing in her two hands
cupt. The catches of the years are torn.
And the wood-light floods and overflows
the bowl she holds like a question.

Voices of children from playgrounds come
sounding on the wind without names.
We cannot tell who they are there
we once were too under what star?

Before words, after words . hands
lifted as a bowl for water, alms or prayer.
For what we heard was no more than a dove’s

   hurrrrrr
   harrrrrr
   hurrr

      where the Day slept
after noon, in the light’s blur and shade
the Queen of the Tree’s Talking
  hears only the leaf sound,
whirrr of wings in the boughs,

the voices in the wind verging into leaf sound.

      4

I wanted to say something,
that my heart had such a burden,
or needed a burden in order to say something.

Take what mask to find words
and as an old man come forward
into a speech he had long waited for,

had on the tip of his tongue,
from which now . O fateful thread!
Sentence that thru my song most moved!

Now from your courses the flame has fled
making but words of what I loved.”

"Samuel Menashe
   — "In the storm's eye"
   — "Wake up late"
   — "The only one"
(The gnomic simplicity of Menashe's poems reminds me of William Bronk; these three last lines make kind of a nice poem in themselves.)"

"Different Ways to Pray

There was the method of kneeling,
a fine method, if you lived in a country
where stones were smooth.
The women dreamed wistfully of bleached courtyards,
hidden corners where knee fit rock.
Their prayers were weathered rib bones,
small calcium words uttered in sequence,
as if this shedding of syllables could somehow
fuse them to the sky.

There were the men who had been shepherds so long
they walked like sheep.
Under the olive trees, they raised their arms—
Hear us! We have pain on earth!
We have so much pain there is no place to store it!
But the olives bobbed peacefully
in fragrant buckets of vinegar and thyme.
At night the men ate heartily, flat bread and white cheese,
and were happy in spite of the pain, because there was also happiness.

Some prized the pilgrimage,
wrapping themselves in new white linen
to ride buses across miles of vacant sand.
When they arrived at Mecca
they would circle the holy places,
on foot, many times, they would bend to kiss the earth
and return, their lean faces housing mystery.

While for certain cousins and grandmothers
the pilgrimage occurred daily,
lugging water from the spring
or balancing the baskets of grapes.

These were the ones present at births,
humming quietly to perspiring mothers.
The ones stitching intricate needlework into
children’s dresses,
forgetting how easily children soil clothes.

There were those who didn’t care about praying.
The young ones. The ones who had been to America.
They told the old ones, you are wasting your time.
Time?—The old ones prayed for the young ones.
They prayed for Allah to mend their brains,
for the twig, the round moon,
to speak suddenly in a commanding tone.

And occasionally there would be one
who did none of this,
the old man Fowzi, for example, Fowzi the fool,
who beat everyone at dominoes,
insisted he spoke with God as he spoke with goats,
and was famous for his laugh."
